What Are The Importance of Fasting and Prayer?

Fasting, along with prayer, is an important spiritual discipline; and it’s also one of the best natural methods for detoxifying and cleansing the body. Fasting promotes truth, humility and compassion in any person. By fasting, we are able to break free from bad habits, rid ourselves of our worldly obsession with food and appearance, but most importantly we learn to comfort others who may be struggling. So as you fast you may also pray for your spouse and anyone else you feel led to.

Fasting is a voluntary act of self-denial in order to prepare for receiving guidance from the Lord through prayer. Fasting and prayer are inseparably bound together in Scripture. Jesus Christ and the Apostles taught that when we fast, We should also pray (Matt. 6:16; Luke 2:37).

Fasting is the simplest way to draw closer to God. It’s for when we need an extra push, a little help from God, but we can’t seem to get it on our own. Although fasting is often seen as painful and monotonous, when done properly, it can be a pleasant experience.

Fasting and prayer is so important that God commanded His disciples to do it on a daily basis. If we will consistently fast and pray, we will see our faith grow, we will have answers to our prayers, and we will begin to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised.

Through fasting and prayer, God wishes to meet with you. When we dedicate a period of time to be with God, He is able to show us how we can become more like Christ. In order to learn how best to schedule this kind of effort in our lives, we need to study His word, listen to those who have gone before us and pray for guidance.
